From the recording One Day
I first left Hawaiʻi in 1989 after living there for nearly four years. The emotion I felt flying away that evening -- not knowing when Iʻd return -- was crushing. This mele reflects those feelings. Played in Taro Patch tuning.

The plane climbs high Iʻm looking back
Moonlit harbor Honolulu lights
Couldnʻt believe I had to go
Trying hard to hide my tears
Then I close my eyes to calm my mind
I hear your voice begging me to remember
Waterfalls and rainbows that always follow the rain
Morning mist in the valleys and the spray of breaking waves
The beauty of the Koʻolau and the smell of fragrant trades
And please return to me one day
And please return to me one day
The years gone by my heartʻs grown cold
The seasons roll eternity spins
My steps move slow as I look back
My mind is calm no longer drifts
Every now and then it becomes oh so clear
I hear your voice begging me to surrender
Waterfalls and rainbows that always follow the rain
Morning mist in the valleys and the spray of breaking waves
The beauty of the Koʻolau and the smell of fragrant trades
And please return to me one day
Waterfalls and rainbows that always follow the rain
Morning mist in the valleys and the spray of breaking waves
The beauty of the Koʻolau and the smell of fragrant trades
And please return to me one day
And please return to me one day
Think Iʻll return to you (spoken) this day
